Look Good Feel Better

Yesterday I did my first volunteering for this year for Look Good Feel Better. I have been volunteering for about 4 years now. After so many years working in the world of make up it was fantastic to find a way to help others doing the job I love. Helping women suffering with Cancer and giving them a couple hours to Look good and feel better. It is very uplifting for everyone involved.

Demon Drink

Booze, Demon drink, the hard stuff all words that describe alcohol and all words that imply you must be tough to drink this stuff. So much is said about it and it really is the demon of the youth in the Naughties. With drinking and weight being two big issues in society today maybe we should look at the calories in alcohol being a considerable factor to the weight issue and the time each unit of alcohol takes to leave the body puts a huge strain on your Liver, which will undoubtedly add to the NHS problems in the future.  So think before you drink!

Here are a few facts

Alcohol Calories (approx)
Standard glass of white wine  = 158 Kcal
Sm bottle Peroni Beer             = 152Kcal
1 pint lager                            =  180Kcal
1 pint Light Cider                   = 140 Kcal
1 pint cider                            =  210 Kcal
75cl Bottle of Vodka               =1456 Kcal
75cl bottle of Jack Daniels      =1740 Kcal
Bottle white wine                    = 605 kcal
Bottle Red wine                       = 510 Kcal
Bottle Prosecco                       = 500 Kcal
Bottle of Bacardi Rum 75cl      =2500cal
Bottle of Dark rum  75cl          =1650cal
1 Small Glass of rum and diet coke (diluted rum) =70cal

Units
A bottle rum/spirits 40% proof = 28 units
Pub measure glass spirits = 1.4 units
sm Glass wine = 1.5 units
 L Glass wine =   2.8 units
Pint of lager =    2.3 units
Remember it takes approx 1 hour per unit to leave your body, the more units you drink the more stress on your liver.

Lower-risk drinking
Lower-risk drinking is drinking at a level associated with a low risk of future harm to your health.
For men, lower-risk is drinking no more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day on a  regular basis. For women, it’s lower risk if they drink no more than 2-3 units of alcohol a day on a regular basis.
Sensible' or 'responsible' drinking are sometimes used to mean lower-risk drinking.

Increasing-risk drinking
Increasing-risk drinking is drinking associated with an increased risk of future harm to your health, with the risk increasing the more you drink.
For men, this riskier level of drinking is drinking more than 3-4 units of alcohol a day on a regular basis. For women, it's drinking more than 2-3 units a day on a regular basis.

Higher-risk drinking
Higher-risk drinking is drinking at such a high level that you’re at particularly high risk of harming your health.

For men, higher-risk drinking is regularly drinking over over 50 units a week (eight units of alcohol a day). For women, it’s regularly drinking over 35 units a week (over six units of alcohol a day).

Burn Calories at work

There is alot to be said about the ability to be able to stand up at your desk when working. In my experience with years of working as a make up artist, I have always stood, and as long as I can get my model at the right height to avoid stooping I have had no posture issues, though perhaps aching feet after making up 20 models for a fashion show. Now I am spending more and more time working on Nutrition plans I find myself sat at a computer. I find my neck hurts and if I didn't take regular breaks and exercise I would become stiff and sluggish. If you have a height adjustable or sit/stand desk then I would suggest you use it. Standing, as long as you are working at the correct height will help with posture, and as a healthy eating/weight  ambassador I would encourage you to stand whenever possible, it will help to burn calories and can also help to regulate your glucose levels.

Prolonged sitting has been linked to problems with glucose control, and also a sharp reduction in the activity
of lipoprotein lipase, this enzyme breaks down blood fats
and makes them into a fuel for the muscles. This reduction in enzyme activity leads to raised levels of fats in the blood, increasing the risk of heart disease.
Standing allows our bodies to have a more constant increase in muscle activity which will burn more calories and Simple constant movement helps us to keep our all-important blood sugar under control.

It is not possible for everyone to stand up at work but researchers believe that even small adjustments can help. Think about taking the stairs rather than the lift, deliver a message rather than email, stand while talking on the phone.Take regular breaks away from your chair and stretch your muscles whenever you can.

Raspberry ketones

I have just been looking in to this supplement for my daughter and thought I would share.
The first thing is as I told her unfortunately to lose and maintain weight loss takes determination and hard work even with a supplement and really there is no miracle cure for weight loss or no one would be over weight and I would be out of a job???
My advice is to Just eat raspberries, cranberries and blackberries as a much healthier and enjoyable way to get the ketones than from a supplement.
There is no proof that humans can lose weight only media hype, although mice and rats have lost some body fat when exposed to this. The ketone is the molecule in the fruits that is responsible for the flavour and smell. so the Ketones can be got from eating the fresh variety of the fruit, however it is found in very small amounts so to get Ketones in larger quantities the supplement is made from chemicals in a lab. So if you take this supplement you are putting more unnecessary Chemicals in the body, so it is not really a healthy option and with no real proven evidence that it will assist you in losing weight.

I will look into this further and let you know what I find out.

Lemon for health

 Lemons

The lemon is a small evergreen tree native to Asia. The yellow fruit is used for culinary and non-culinary purposes throughout the world, primarily for its juice, though the pulp and rind are also used in cooking and baking

 Health Benefits of Lemons:

  • Lemon has 88% Vitamin C

  •  Lemons are alkalizing for the body: Lemons are acidic to begin with but they are alkaline-forming on body fluids helping to restore balance to the body’s pH.
  •  Lemons are rich in vitamin C and flavonoids that work against infections like the flu and colds.

  •  Your liver loves lemons: “The lemon is a wonderful stimulant to the liver. Fresh lemon juice added to a large glass of water in the morning is a great liver detoxifier.

  •  Cleans your bowels: Lemons increase peristalsis in the bowels, helping to create a bowel movement thus eliminating waste and helping with regularity. Add the juice of one lemon to warm water and drink first thing in the morning.

  •  Scurvy is treated by giving one to two ounces of lemon juice diluted with water every two to four hours. In 1747, a naval surgeon named James Lind cured scurvy with fresh lemons. To this day, the British Navy requires ships to carry enough lemons so that every sailor could have one ounce of juice a day. In the past, lemons were replaced with limes; this is where the English got their nickname “limeys.”

  •  The citric acid in lemon juice helps to dissolve gallstones, calcium deposits, and kidney stones.

  •  Vitamin C in lemons helps to neutralize free radicals linked to aging and most types of disease.

  • The lemon peel contains the potent phytonutrient tangeretin, which has been proven to be effective for brain disorders like Parkinson’s disease.

  •  It destroys intestinal worms.

  • Lemons have powerful antibacterial properties; experiments have found the juice of lemons destroy the bacteria of malaria, cholera, diphtheria, typhoid and other deadly diseases.

  •  Blood vessels are strengthened by the vitamin P (bioflavinoids) in lemon thus prevents internal hemorrhage. Also, making it useful in treating high blood pressure.

  •  The symptoms of eye disorders, including diabetic retinopathy have been shown in research to improve due to the rutin, found in lemons.

  • . Lemons contain 22 anti-cancer compounds, including naturally occurring limonene; oil which slows or halts the growth of cancer tumors in animals and flavonol glycosides which stop cell division in cancer cells

  • .Limonoids Lemons and limes contain disease-fighting compounds known as limonoids. The human body is able to readily absorb a specific, long-acting limonoid known as limonin,  Both lemons and limes contain nearly as much limonin as they do vitamin C. Limonoids are known to be effective at partially inhibiting the growth of human ovarian cancer cells and inducing the death of breast cancer cells.

  •  Marinades. Meats that are grilled at a high heat on a bbq can create carcinogens from the fat that drips on to the flames. This can be reduced by marinating the meat in marinades that contain anti oxidants, especially citrus fruits such as lemons and limes.

Welcome to 2015

It's a new year a new start. Remember what you eat defines you, so eat healthy.
